Prognosis of congestive heart failure after prior myocardial infarction in older men and women with abnormal versus normal left ventricular ejection fraction

In a prospective study of 198 older men and 418 older women with congestive heart failure after prior myocardial infarction, Kaplan-Meier survival curves showed that mortality was significantly higher in men with abnormal left ventricular (LV) ejection fraction than in men (p = 0.0004) and women (p = 0.0001) with normal LV ejection fraction, and in women with abnormal LV ejection fraction than in men (p = 0.0001) and women (p = 0.0001) with normal LV ejection fraction. The Cox regression model showed that significant independent risk factors for total mortality were age (p = 0.0001, risk ratio 1.03), hypertension (p = 0.0057, risk ratio 1.3), diabetes mellitus (p = 0.0002, risk ratio 1.4), and abnormal LV ejection fraction (p = 0.0001, risk ratio 2.2).
