mu SR study of antiferromagnetic order in UPt3 alloyed with Pd

摘要
We report on a mu SR study of the evolution of antiferromagnetism in the heavy-fermion pseudobinary series U(Pt, Pd)(3). For pure UPt3 and U(Pt-0.998 Pd-0.002)(3) no small-moment antiferromagnetism has been observed in the present experiment: the zero-field mu SR data yield a temperature-independent Kubo-Toyabe line width sigma(KT) = 0.06 +/- 0.01 mu s(-1) (T less than or equal to 8 K). As recent neutron-diffraction experiments on UPt3 and U(Pt-0.998 Pd-0.002)(3) do reveal magnetic order, we suggest that the muons stop at high symmetry sites where the dipole fields cancel. However, for the large-moment compound U(Pt-0.95 Pd-0.05)(3), the mu SR data unambiguously show magnetic signals: below T-N two frequencies appear (nu(1) similar or equal to 8.0 MHz and nu(2) similar or equal to 2.0 MHz, for T --> 0), indicating two magnetically inequivalent muon stopping sites.
