From simulation to theory in the physics of deformation and fracture

Simulations using generic potentials can provide guidance to theorists in establishing basic models for the deformation and fracture processes. This article describes simulations of deformation and fracture in a two-dimensional glass composed of polydisperse Lennard-Jones spheres. From analysis of local molecular rearrangements during deformation, a theory of plasticity that may apply to a far broader class of materials is derived and tested.
