Effect of herringbone reconstruction on interference of two-dimensional electron gas on Au(111) surfaces

Low temperature scanning tunneling microscopy study at similar to 30 K has revealed that the long-range ''herringbone'' reconstruction has a significant effect on the formation of standing waves in the Fermi-level surface-state electron density on an Au(111)-(23X root 3) reconstructed surface. The anisotropic standing-wave formation has been clearly observed on terraces, on a monolayer island, and in a monolayer depression. The amplitudes of the standing waves were found to be enhanced along pairwise soliton walls. The observed anisotropy of the standing-wave formation suggests the important role of the herringbone-reconstruction structure on the propagation and interference of surface-state electron waves.
