We present bond-valence sum (BVS) calculations for YBa2Cu3Oy ("YBCO"), using the data of Cava et al., and for (CaxLa1 - x)(Ba1.75 - xLa0.25 + x)Cu3Oy ("CLBLCO"), using the refined neutron diffraction data of Chmaissen et al. It has been conjectured that from the BVS results one can estimate the concentration of mobile charge carriers in the CuO2 plane. We have used both the method of Brown ct al, and that of Tallon ct al. for estimating this number. The difference between the two methods will be discussed, and the conjecture will be critically reviewed. (C) 2000 Published by Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
