Irritable bowel syndrome - A cost-effective approach for primary care physicians

Recognition and appropriate treatment of IBS can be challenging. A rational approach to management focuses on a positive diagnosis based on the characteristic pattern of symptoms and the exclusion of organic disorders. Dietary modification and pharmacological therapy may be useful for relieving symptoms. Patient education and reassurance about the benign course of the disease are important aspects of effective treatment. In severe cases, referral to a psychologist or psychiatrist may be warranted. As our understanding of the pathophysiological process in IBS increases, more effective therapies will likely emerge.
