Characterization of rust on weathering steel by gas adsorption

摘要
The textures of the rusts formed by exposing various kinds of weathering steel to different environments for 17 years were investigated by the adsorption of N-2 and H2O. The specific surface area determined by N-2 adsorption decreased with the increase of sodium chloride (NaCl) content in the exposure situations, indicating that the rusts formed at the coastal site were agglomerates of large particles and had large pores. This result is consistent with the fast corrosion rate on the coast. The high surface area obtained by H2O adsorption on the rusts generated on the coast can be attributed to the tunnels of akaganeite (beta-FeOOH) crystals accessible to H2O but not to N-2.
