In the design and operation of cold storage systems, the problems of saving operation cost and improving global economics of whole systems are equally important. Based on optimal control, yearly dynamic cooling loads and payback period, a method to design an optimal scheme is proposed. An approach to calculate and choose the chiller and cold storage tank for the optimal scheme is provided in the method. The optimal scheme not only minimizes operating cost, but also is the most economical among all the cold storage systems with common control strategies. The method is demonstrated by a case study, in which the optimal scheme is compared on economics with other schemes with chiller priority control or storage priority control. It can be seen that the payback period of the optimal scheme is the shortest. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.
