Contemporary imaging of athletic injuries

The team physician is faced with an array of imaging studies to evaluate the injured athlete, including CT scans, conventional and cross-sectional arthrography, bone scanning, sonography, and MR imaging. An understanding of the clinical usefulness of these examinations requires some knowledge of the physical principles on which they are based. This article presents the fundamental physical principles and summarizes the indications for these tests to the evaluation of common athletic injures.
