HIV-infected individuals suffer from an array of mucocutaneous manifestations resulting from both infectious and noninfectious causes. Dermatologic pathology common to the healthy host often has an increased prevalence or severity in HIV-infected individuals. Some dermatologic diseases exhibit atypical presentations or are nearly exclusive to patients with HIV infection. Standard therapy is often not effective or is associated with relapse. Recognizing HIV-associated skin disease may lead to early HIV diagnosis as well as appropriate management of all conditions, thereby improving the patient's quality of life and perhaps preventing HIV transmission through lifestyle changes.
