Acute oral ulcers are those present for less than 6 weeks. Isolated or recurrent episodes of oral ulcers are common in both healthy individuals and in patients with coexistent and associated systemic illness. This article reviews the approach to evaluation of acute ulcers, outlining the differential diagnosis, discriminating features, and necessary additional studies. This approach allows the clinician to comfortably evaluate and manage the common causes of oral ulcers.
