摘要
Chromatin proteins package the genome and modulate its accessibility for transcription and all other transactions. However, recent work reveals that the chromatin proteins histone H1 and high-mobility group box protein 1 can also be used as signals during cell apoptosis and necrosis, respectively. Is there a reason why dying cells should use their own chromatin to signal that they are going to die or how they have died? This article will argue that any protein in a segregated compartment can be useful for signalling purposes when it leaves its usual location. Might actins, tubulins, lamins and DNA itself have signalling roles?
