Synthesis of fluorescein isothiocyanate (FTIC) labeled poly(Styrenesulfonate soldium salt) was carried out under mild conditions. Low polydispersity was obtained automatically using a solvent/nonsolvent pair or through analytical scale gel permeation chromatography, depending on molecular weight. The fluorescence spectra of FITC labeled NaPSS are investigated at various salt concentrations. It was found that allylamine sites not covered by the FITC are less hydrophobic than the unsulfonated monomer repeat units, present in conventionally produced NaPSS.
