Knowledge of the descriptive epidemiology of colorectal cancer is essential to a better understanding of the aetiology of the disease and the development of screening strategies. Considerable research efforts have been launched over the last IS years to evaluate the ability of screening tests to decrease the incidence and mortality of colorectal cancer. This chapter provides a worldwide update of the incidence of colorectal cancer and reviews the evidence for screening for colorectal cancer based on published studies.
