摘要
This paper introduces a concept of nonlinear analysis of heart rate and respiratory dynamics that may improve the understanding of the underlying physiological processes of the autonomic nervous system (ANS), in comparison with the conventional linear analysis. Since heart-rate variability and heart, respiratory movements can be measured noninvasively, this concept may also be advantageous in diagnostic investigation of patients. Two essential aspects of the phase-space plots are investigated: the correlation dimension (CD) and the largest Lyapunov exponent (LE). The CD is a measure of the complexity of the ANS process, which characterizes the distribution of points in the phase space. The LE is a measure of the predictability of the process, which quantifies the exponential divergence of initially close state-space trajectories.
