Intracranial tuberculoma

The resurgence of tuberculosis is being witnessed all over the world. Nervous system is often implicated and intracranial granulomas are a common manifestation. Formation of intracranial granulomas begin as an inflammatory response to the bacilli lodged within the brain parenchyma. Signs and symptoms are often those of a space occupying lesion with no distinguishing features. Concomitant evidence of tuberculosis should therefore be sought in cases of suspicious looking lesions on CT or the MRI scans. Management of intracranial tuberculomas remain conservative and surgical intervention is restricted to limited cases. Ventriculoperitoneal shunt is carried out to Prevent complications as a result of basal meningitis and hydrocephalus. Drug resistant lesions and those causing mass effect are the ones tackled surgically usually preceded by a stereotactic biopsy. A retrospective study of patients treated at a tertiary referral center in Saudi Arabia is presented.
