Dynamic transition in lysozyme: role of a solvent

Light scattering spectra of lysozyme dissolved in glycerol are analyzed over broad ranges in frequency and temperature. It is shown that the dynamic transition observed earlier in a lysozyme/glycerol sample at T similar to 270 K [Biophys. J, 79 (2000) 2728] is related to the appearance of a slow relaxation process in the GHz frequency window. It is also pointed out that the dynamic transition in the lysozyme/glycerol system happens at a temperature very close to the dynamic transition temperature of bulk glycerol. These results support the idea that biopolymers are 'slaves' of solvents and that the latter controls the dynamic transition. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
