Ambient thin film water on insulator surfaces

摘要
As part of the study of thin film water on ice, this review covers five substrates that each serve as model insulators to host thin film water. Three are ionic crystals: NaCl, MgO, and BaF2. A fourth, muscovite mica, is held together by both covalent and ionic bonds. The fifth substrate is corundrum, α-Al2O3, bound solely by covalent bonds. In addition to covering the methods for studying thin film water, this review also discusses thin film water thickness with emphasis on coverage and thickness, the reason why thin film stick to a surface, isotherms, and thermodynamic quantities.
