Data were obtained from the preliminary files (N = 8,038) of the 1985 National Household Survey on Drug Abuse (NHSDA). The analysis was restricted to 435 adults between the ages of 18 and 54 who had used cocaine in the past year. The questions in the survey were a subset of the Diagnostic Interview Survey (DIS). Odds ratios were computed by logistic regression using Logist. It was estimated that almost 1.6 million of the household population met DSM-III criteria for use, dependence, or combined use and dependence.
