摘要：

During their reproductive years, women are exposed to a predictable pattern of endogenous hormones during a regular ovulatory menstrual cycle, or they may be taking the oral contraceptive pill to control their cycle. This article briefly reviews normal menstrual physiology and the actions of the sex steroids, estrogen and progesterone. The effect of menstrual cycle phase on cardiovascular variables, respiratory function, thermoregulation, energy metabolism, and strength and aerobic performance are discussed. The effects of the oral contraceptive pill are outlined, along with the interaction of the oral contraceptive pill with the cardiovascular system, respiratory system, energy metabolism, and strength and athletic performance.
