Novel crossover from a metallic to an insulating ground-state in (La0.5Nd0.5)(0.67)Ca0.33MnO3 by increasing the oxygen mass

Resistivity and magnetization measurements were performed on the manganese-based perovskite (La0.5Nd0.5)(0.67)Ca0.33MnO3 which were exchanged by the O-16 and O-18 isotopes. There is a novel crossover from a metallic to an insulating ground-state by simply changing the oxygen isotope from O-16 to O-18. Our results are consistent with a scenario in which the insulating behavior is caused by the presence of lattice and magnetic polarons (charge carriers dressed by both lattice distortions and spin polarizations) or a charge-ordered state.
