Pancreatic infection occurs most frequently in association with pancreatic necrosis, occasionally in extrapancreatic fluid collections and pancreatic pseudocysts, and rarely as a pancreatic abscess. It has been suggested that one half of deaths in acute pancreatitis are attributable to infected necrosis. The focus of this article is the recognition and management of pancreatic infections.
