Interlayer exchange coupling: The role of electron confinement in the overlayer due to the vacuum barrier

摘要
The phenomenon of interlayer exchange coupling between two ferromagnetic layers separated by a paramagnetic spacer is usually attributed to quantum interferences due to electron confinement in the spacer. This paper considers the effect of electron confinement in the paramagnetic overlayer due to the vacuum barrier. It is shown that this leads to a novel oscillatory behavior of the interlayer exchange coupling: the latter is predicted to oscillate versus overlayer thickness. This is confirmed by several experimental investigations.
