Diabetes management in special situations

Despite an explosion of new treatments for diabetes in the last decade, there has been Little additional information for the treatment of diabetes for certain common clinical problems. In this article, the treatments for four situations are reviewed: perioperative diabetes management, the transfer to subcutaneous insulin from an intravenous insulin infusion, diabetes management during glucocorticoid therapy, and diabetes treatment with hyperalimentation. New agents for the treatment of diabetes, particularly new insulin analogues, will likely allow for better glycemic control during these time periods.
