Radiologic anatomy of the prostate gland: A clinical approach

Efforts to reduce the morbidity associated with treatment of prostate cancer and benign prostatic hyperplasia are leading to increasingly patient-specific and disease-targeted therapy. Radiologists play an important role in the assessment of treatment efficacy and complications through the critical evaluation and interdisciplinary discussion of imaging anatomy before and after therapy This article reviews prostatic and periprostatic radiologic anatomy, with an emphasis on those aspects that are clinically relevant to current uroradiologic practice. Particular attention is given to the use of MR imaging, because it is the current modality of choice for prostate cancer imaging.
