Diffusion in intermetallic phases - Historical facts and new results

摘要
Fast diffusion of the majority component in intermetallics was discovered thirty years ago in the system Ni-Sb with DO3 structure (stable close to Ni3Sb) and soon afterwards in the DO3 structured systems Cu-Sb and Cu-Sn. Fast diffusion goes along with low activation enthalpies and high vacancy concentrations. The minority components' diffusivities are much lower. After a report on fast diffusion in Ni3Sb, particularly reporting what has been learned since then about the atomistic jump mechanism, we discuss recently discovered fast diffusion of Fe in Fe3Si. In a joint effort of radiotracer method, Mossbauer spectroscopy, neutron scattering and positron annihilation spectroscopy the diffusivities of majority and minority components, the elementary diffusion jump of the Fe atoms, phonon dispersions and vacancy concentration have been determined. Very recently that firm fundament has served for the development of a new method in diffusion, namely nuclear resonant scattering of synchrotron radiation.
