Surgery for ulcerative colitis

Ulcerative colitis is an inflammatory bowel disease that may be cured by surgery. With the advancement of restorative techniques to preserve continence, surgery has become even more popular today. Presently one-third of patients with ulcerative colitis undergo surgical resection, with the majority undergoing surgery within 10 years of initial diagnosis. Surgery is indicated for both emergency situations, resulting from complications of fulminant disease and elective indications. The objectives of this article are to provide: (1) a broad overview of the technical aspects and results of these various operations, and (2) a rationale of the clinician to individualize and optimize surgical management of the ulcerative colitis patients presenting with diverse clinical scenarios.
