Synthesis and optical properties of europium oxide nanoparticles immobilized on amorphous silica microspheres

Europium oxide nanoparticles with an average size of similar to 5 nm were deposited on the surface of pre-formed silica submicrospheres with the aid of power ultrasound. The morphology and optical properties of the final product were examined by electron microscopy and spectroscopic techniques. :Amorphous europium oxide nanoparticles immobilized on the spherical silica surface exhibited the characteristic (5)Dc --> (7)Fo, (5)Do --> F-7(1), (5)Do --> F-7(2) transitions with increasing wavelength, arising from the 4f states of the Eu3+ ion.
