Celiac disease and other precursors to small-bowel malignancy

Malignancies of the small intestine are rare. Celiac disease is a risk factor for the development of both adenocarcinoma and T-cell lymphoma of the small intestine. The development of lymphoma accounts for the majority of the increased mortality in celiac disease. Patients with Crohn's disease are also at increased risk for carcinoma, though this is rarely diagnosed preoperatively. The inherited polyposis syndromes, FAP and Peutz Jehgers syndrome, are also risk factors for small bowel carcinoma.
