Sonography, in all its forms, is a technology with a bright future in the investigation and management of the injured patient because it is inexpensive, portable, noninvasive, and repeatable. In this article, the history of the use of sonography in trauma is highlighted, the present applications of this technology are discussed, training issues are examined, and the authors speculate on the future applications of sonography in the management of the multiply injured patient in the next millennium.
