Mechanically bolt-jointed plasma facing components (PFC) are developed and tested in order to use low cost and high performance divertor plates. Each PFC consists of a graphite tile, cooling pipe, and backing pipes. For the improvement of thermal properties of the PFC, a thin carbon sheet is used at the interface between the tile and backing plate. This PFC using a 100 mu m carbon sheet and a copper cooling pipe can be used to high heat flux up to 5 MW/m(2) for 20 s loading test while 1.2 MW/m(2) for 1000 s long pulse loading test. The structure of the PFC, effects of the carbon sheet on the thermal properties, and the set of experimental results are described. Copyright (C) 1996 Elsevier Science Ltd.
