The Ringberg standards for NGC 1068

We present basic ''constants'' for NGC 1068 for which there is some agreement between observers using the best available data. While the listed values may ultimately undergo slight corrections, our intention is to encourage researchers to adhere to a common standard. To illustrate one of the most frustrating inconsistencies, in a random survey of a dozen papers (1975-1995), the distance to NGC 1068 is placed anywhere in the range 10 to 30 Mpc, which unnecessarily complicates discussions of global quantities such as energies, linear scales, total masses, and so forth. As a sort of NGC 1068 vade mecum, we also provide summaries of recent, useful measurements to facilitate literature searches and first-order calculations and comparisons.
