摘要：

In the United Kingdom, the "Research Assessment Exercise" is used by central government as a way of distributing infra-structure funds to University departments to support research. Departments with the highest ratings get extra support, while departments with low ratings may have their existing support withdrawn. The paper describes an exercise aimed at improving the rating obtained by one such department. Declaration of Interest: none.
