The north-south divide in the UK defence sector, Reg. Studies 33, 829-841. This paper examines some of the key characteristics of the north-south divide in the UK defence sector. The analysis is based on new data derived from a national questionnaire survey of major defence contractors. Particular attention is devoted to analysis of spatial differences in high technology employment, R&D activity, involvement in overseas markets and civilian diversification. The study concludes that, whilst there is evidence of a domestic spatial divide in the defence sector, the location of the industry is increasingly likely to be affected by developments in the global arms market.
