A workshop on 'Variability of the global atmospheric circulation during the past 100 years' that took place on Monte Veritá near Ascona from 15-20 July 2008, is discussed. Several presentations addressed the tropical circulation, especially El Nino-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and its teleconnections. The researchers showed that the teleconnections among the tropical oceans as well as between the tropics and the extratropics are still not fully understood. The contribution by WANG and coworkers reviews current understanding of the teleconnections of the tropical Atlantic with the Indian Ocean and the tropical Pacific. ZHOU and researchers provided a review of the variability of the East Asian summer monsoon. Understanding these circulation systems is particularly important also because climate change affects the tropical Pacific, which may also alter the teleconnections to other parts of the globe.
