Polypyrrole/palladium composites for the electrocatalyzed Heck reaction

Composite layers of palladium particles embedded in polypyrrole, are formed in a two-step process: electropolymerization of pyrrole followed by an electrochemical deposition of palladium from Pd(OAc)(2) solution. These composites are suitable as a heterogeneous catalyst for the Heck reaction. The catalytic reaction of chloro-, bromo- and iodo-benzene with styrene to form trans-stilbene is studied. It is demonstrated that the Heck reaction can be driven electrochemically. The catalysis is analyzed by spectroelectrochemistry in parallel geometry and gas chromatographic analysis of the solution. The mechanism of the electrochemical driven Heck reaction is discussed. (C) 2004 Published by Elsevier B.V.
