Simultaneous Occurrence of Self-Assembling Silicate Skeletons to Wormlike Microarrays and Epoxy Ring-Opening Polymerization

A study was conducted to investigate the occurrence of self-assembling silicate skeletons to wormlike microarrays and epoxy ring-opening polymerization. The self-assembly process was controlled by selecting the amphiphilic poly(oxyalkylene)diamine salts (POP)/clay hybrids under water-evaporating conditions. The modified clays were easily dispersed in hydrophobic epoxy resins and demonstrated the successful synthesis of nanocomposites when cured with a second component of amine curing agent. It was observed that the POP-amine-salt in the mica gallery initiated the epoxy ring-polymerization in a fast rate at an elevated temperature. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) micrographs revealed that the mica clay unit underwent a self-piling into radial-shape arrays and self-assembled to 60 layers.
