Formation and chemistry of nanocrystalline phases formed during deformation in aluminum-rich metallic glasses

摘要
A chemical analysis has been made of nanocrystals formed through mechanical deformation. Experimental results demonstrate that when metallic glasses form nanocrystals within deformation bands in Al90Fe5Gd5 metallic glasses chemical segregation occurs. Previous work by Chen et al showed that there is deformation induced nanocrystal formation in shear bands in this alloy. This work reveals that the nanocrystals formed have art approximate composition of 95 at% Al, 2 at% Gd and 2 at% Fe. Comparison with nanocrystals formed by isothermal heat treatment in the same alloy revealed nearly identical chemical profiles. (C) 1997 Acta Metallurgica Inc.
