Bandwidth narrowing in bulk L(2/3)A(1/3)MnO(3) magnetoresistive oxides

The key structural factor governing the one-electron bandwidth (W) in L(2/3)A(1/3)MnO(3) (A = Ca, Sr) magnetoresistive oxides has been identified by a neutron study. Reducing the size (R(0)) of the lanthanide, the Mn-O bondlength in MnO6 octahedra does not change (d(Mn-0) approximate to 1.960 Angstrom) and hence does not contribute to the narrowing of the sigma(e(g)) conduction bandwidth. In contrast, the Mn-O-Mn angle (theta) bends at a rate d theta/dR(0) = 122.6 Angstrom(-1). The calculation of the bandwidth dependence on theta has been performed and it has been found to be proportional to the measured Curie temperature, both having almost a T-c(theta) approximate to W(theta) approximate to cos(2) theta dependence.
