Thoracic and upper abdominal computed tomography (CT), in conjunction with endoscopic ultrasound, is an integral part of staging oesophageal carcinoma. When performed with spiral CT, an additional advantage is three-dimensional (3D) image reconstruction of the oesophagus and gastrooesophageal junction. The advantages of 3D CT of oesophageal tumors are: 1) it provides a readily recognizable image depicting tumor length and location with respect to other mediastinal air-filled structures and the gastrooesophageal junction; 2) it provides an image comparable to a barium swallow without the inherent risks of barium aspiration; 3) it provides an estimation of tumor volume reduction following chemotherapy; and 4) CT virtual endoscopy is possible.
