Generalized non-linear thermoelasticity for composite laminated structures using a mixed variational approach

Generalized non-linear thermoelasticity problem for composite laminated structures is presented using a modified version of Reissner's mixed variational formula. The present mixed variational formula is derived based on Hamilton's principle and Lagrange's multiplier method. The thermal effect accounting for a finite velocity of thermal disturbances through a relaxation time is introduced in the variational statement using the body force analogy. With the help of the resulting mixed variational formula, a generalized non-linear thermoelastic beam theory of the first order is presented. Moreover, the beam theory is in complete consistence with the surface conditions. Generalized non-linear thermoelastic governing equations with the required boundary conditions are deduced for a composite laminated beam subjected to thermo-mechanical loads. The thermoelastic equations corresponding to the different thermoelastic theories may be easily obtained as special cases. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.
