摘要
The emission of low molecular mass hydrocarbons by many plants has long been recognized, particularly through effects on atmospheric chemistry. However, until recently the reasons why the plants produced these compounds and how the production was achieved had remained unclear. Studies of specific hydrocarbons leaf alcohol, methanol, acetone and isoprene - are now resolving some of the synthetic pathways involved and elucidating possible functions. Although some of the hydrocarbons may simply be by-products of normal metabolism, or for the removal of waste, others may have highly specific physiological roles.
