摘要
The formation of a ternary Al-Mg-Zn phase along grain boundaries when Zn is added in levels of between 0.68 and 0.70% to an otherwise standard Al-5083 alloy composition is demonstrated by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) observations, coupled with energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) investigations. Zinc additions to sensitized 5083-based Al-Mg-Mn alloys precludes the formation of β-phase precipitates, resulting instead in the formation of Al-Mg-Zn τ-phase at grain and subgrain boundaries. The τ-phase is more resistant to corrosion than the β-phase, evidenced by preliminary exfoliation test performance and by the lesser degree of degradation of the secondary phase following electropolishing of TEM foils.
