Complexation of 2,8-diethyl-1,3,7,9-tetramethyl-5-(2-pyridyl)dipyrromethene with zinc(II) generated an unprecedented structural motif for a dipyrromethene ligand, of formula Zn-2(dipyrromethene)(2)X-2, where X represents a coordinated anion.
