The cognitive effects of the most commonly used antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) are reviewed, discussing both the absolute effects (the effects compared to no-treatment) and the relative effects (the comparison of one AED with an other). The cognitive profile per AED is given, based on a literature database, consisting of 1,357 articles in peer-review journals. Available information on the newer AEDs is discussed as an addendum.
