Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a serious national problem, ranking fourth as a cause of death. The elusive nature of COPD unfortunately contributes to late diagnosis. How can primary care physicians help reverse the increasing morbidity and mortality of COPD? Dr Doherty discusses the importance of spirometric testing in detecting COPD in its early stages and describes pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic interventions for optimal early treatment.
