The reduction of a relativistic Hamiltonian to its effective nonrelativistic form, usually accomplished via a Foldy-Wouthuysen transformation, is derived via Lagrangian methods. This technique provides a pedagogically interesting introduction to the so-called heavy baryon field theory. (C) 1997 American Association of Physics Teachers.
