XPS study of surface segregation in Ni-Mg alloy films

摘要
The surface composition of binary metallic thin alloy films has been studied as a function of temperature and oxygen exposure. Several NixMg1-x alloy films, with x in the range 0.66-0.9, were prepared and studied in situ by means of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). In all films magnesium was found to segregate at the surface in agreement with the theoretical predictions. From the temperature dependence of the segregation the heat of segregation Delta H-s was calculated. It was observed that O chemisorption induced surface segregation of magnesium and the formation of sub-surface Ni-oxide rather than the more stable MgO. Copyright (C) 1996 Elsevier Science Ltd.
