Aerobic denitrification by a newly isolated heterotrophic bacterium strain TL1

A bacterial strain which eliminates NH3 by aerobic nitrification/heterotrophic denitrification below a pO(2) of 30 % saturation was enriched in continuous culture from the nitrification step of a leachate-treatment plant and isolated as pure culture. The strain uses acetate, propionate, butyrate, and ethanol as carbon sources and belongs to the beta-subgroup of proteobacteria. Reaction parameters for deammonification and substrate utilization were determined.
