A highly enantiocontrolled synthesis of D-(+)-erythro-dihydrosphingosine (sphinganine) triacetate is described using the Sharpless asymmetric dihydroxylation and the regiospecific nucleophilic opening of a cyclic sulfite as key steps. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.
